How to keep our joints healthy?
Joints and their surrounding structures allow you to bend your elbows and knees, smooth tissue called cartilage and synovium and a lubricant called synovial fluid cushion the joints so bones do not rub together. But increasing age, injury — even sitting the wrong way or carrying too much weight — can wear and tear your cartilage. This can lead to a reaction that can damage your joints and lead to arthritis. Glucosamine sulfate is a naturally occurring chemical found in the human body. It is in the fluid that is around joints. Glucosamine sulfate is commonly used for arthritis. Scientists have studied it extensively for this use. It is most often used for a type of arthritis called osteoarthritis. This is the most common type of arthritis.
Boswellia Serrata is considered “A Natural Pain Killer More Powerful Than Ibuprofen”, and one of the best-studied areas of Boswellia serrata is with osteoarthritis.
In one double blind, placebo-controlled, randomized study (i.e. gold standard), Indian researchers divided 60 participants with osteoarthritis in the knees into two groups. The first group received 100 mg of Boswellia serrata extract. The second group received a placebo. After 30 days, researchers found that those taking 100 mg of Boswellia serrata extract had both clinically and statistically significant improvements in pain and physical function. Best of all, it worked within five days!
A similar study also looked at patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. In this double blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, crossover study, researchers divided 30 participants into two groups. One group received Boswellia serrata extract for eight weeks while the other received a placebo. The groups then had a “washout” period, then switched groups. The placebo group took the Boswellia for eight weeks while the original Boswellia group took a placebo. Researchers found that when the participants took the Boswellia serrata, they enjoyed less knee pain, improved movement, could walk farther for longer, and had less incidence of swelling. Additionally, there were very few side effects, only minor gastrointestinal upset in a handful of participants.
Lastly, in yet another double blind, placebo-controlled, randomized study, researchers divided 75 participants into three groups. The first group received 100mg Boswellia serrata extract for 90 days. The second group received 250 mg Boswellia serrata extract and the third group received a placebo. At the end of the 90 days, researchers found that both dosages of the Boswellia serrata conferred clinical as well as statistically significant improvements in pain and physical function. The main difference was that those taking the 250 mg dosage felt relief within seven days.
Clearly, when it comes to osteoarthritis, Boswellia serrata not only works, but is highly effective, safe, and tolerable.
The use of willow bark dates back thousands of years, to the time of Hippocrates (400 BC) when patients were advised to chew on the bark to reduce fever and inflammation. Willow bark has been used throughout the centuries in China and Europe, and continues to be used today for the treatment of pain (particularly low back pain and osteoarthritis), headache, and inflammatory conditions, such as bursitis and tendinitis. The bark of white willow contains salicin, which is a chemical similar to aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid). In combination with the herb’s powerful anti-inflammatory plant compounds (called flavonoids), salicin is thought to be responsible for the pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects of the herb. In fact, in the 1800s, salicin was used to develop aspirin. White willow appears to bring pain relief more slowly than aspirin, but its effects may last longer.
Yucca is the common name for the more than 40 species of plants in the Yucca genus. The root of the non-flowering plant is used to make medicine. Yucca contains chemicals that reduce arthritis symptoms such as pain, swelling, and stiffness.
